At-Airport-Release: Picking Up Your Pet

Your pet has arrived in Hawaii.  The next step in the process is picking up your pet from the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility, which is located on the grounds of the Honolulu International Airport.  For your pet to remain qualified for the direct-airport-release, you must pick your pet up at the airport.  It is important that you arrange for your pet to arrive at the Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility within their operating hours to pick your pet up upon arrival.

The Airport Animal Quarantine Holding Facility’s hours are between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Inspection hours are subject to change at any time without notice.  I cannot stress enough the importance of following up during the planning of your pet’s move and during your pet’s actual travel day to ensure dates and times remain on track.

Allow for at least one hour for the airlines to transport your pet to the Holding Facility.  Pets not arriving at the facility during their inspection hours will NOT be released at the airport.

Pets on international flights will need to clear US Customs before being released from the Holding Facility.  Check with your airline regarding US Customs hours of operation to ensure that they will be open to process your pet for release.

If ticks or parasites are found on your pet at time of arrival, your pet will not qualify for direct airport release.

Federal security regulations at the Honolulu International Airport require that all pets that qualify for direct-airport-release must be secured in their flight carriers when picked up from the Airport Animal Holding Facility until the animal is off airport grounds.  Do NOT take your pet out of their crate.

It is your, the owner’s, responsibility to arrange all transportation for your pet once released from the Airport Holding Facility.  It may be useful to bring a baggage cart to transport your crated pet from the Airport Holding Facility to another Terminal, if traveling on to an outer island, after the release of your pet (or if your pet is a large breed). There are no carts at the Airport Animal Holding Facility.

If you, or a designated person*, are not able to pick up your pet the day of arrival, your pet will be transferred to the Animal Quarantine Station the following morning.  It will be registered into the 5-Day-or-Less Program and that program’s fees of $224 per pet will apply.

*An animal may only be released to the consignee identified on the shipmaster’s declaration or owners listed on a notarized Dog and Cat Import Form (AQS 278.) If you are not traveling with your pet, you must make arrangements with the airlines to consign your pet to the individual who will pick up your pet.
